Drought hits 58 provinces hurting millions (Tahilandia)
This year's drought has already affected more than eight million people in 58 provinces, with water levels in several major rivers ''critically low'', according to the Irrigation Department. 8.2 million, and the number was likely to increase with the drought crisis expected to grow even more severe this month.
About 114,000 rai of farmland has been affected, he said. To relieve water shortages, the department has installed water pumps and distributed drinking water to villages in the worst-hit areas.
The Irrigation Department reported on its website that water in major rivers had dropped to critically low levels.
These include the Mae Lao, Pai, Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan rivers in the North, Kwai Noi and Pasak rivers in the Central Plains, and Chee and Moon rivers in the Northeast. However, most major reservoirs were still above 50% capacity, the department reported.
Akhanay Boonleart, chief of the artificial rainmaking unit in the Central Plains, expressed concern over the worsening drought situation in Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, and Lop Buri, with no rain in the region for months.
''The rainmaking pilots have been trying to draw rainy clouds over the Tennasserim range in the west to generate rainfall in the central provinces,'' he said.
Water storage in Central Plains reservoirs are expected to drop to critical levels within the next two months because unusually high temperatures, triggered by the El Nino weather phenomenon, have caused more rapid evaporation of stored water than normal, he said.
